1984–1989

The Association’s Beginnings

  1. 1984

    EBPOA Is Formed

    Organized to combat building and zoning code violations.

  2. 1985

    Waterfront Development

    Opposed a waterfront lot sale and zoning change for condominiums on Yacht Club Road.

  3. 1985–1986

    Building Height Standards

    Secured a reduction in the height of Bay Creek Villas to meet code requirements.

  4. 1986–1989

    Protecting the South Edisto River

    Stopped DHEC from downgrading portions of the South Edisto River.

1990–1999

Development & Environmental Advocacy

  1. 1990

    Dock Site Road Rezoning

    Opposed rezoning of Dock Site Road property for a proposed 40-unit motel and retail space.

  2. 1994

    Beach Erosion Study

    Commissioned a beach erosion study by Duke University.

  3. 1995

    First Candidates Forum

    Sponsored the Association’s first candidates forum for Town candidates.

  4. 1996

    Jungle Road Motel Proposal

    Legally challenged a new motel proposed on Jungle Road.

  5. 1997

    Colleton County Rezoning

    Opposed rezoning of unincorporated property in Colleton County to “Urban Development” and “Growth and Development District.”

  6. 1999

    Water & Sewer Expansion

    Opposed Charleston Public Works providing a new water line onto Edisto Island and opposed a sewer line extension to Palmetto Boulevard.

2000–2009

Community Involvement & Preservation

  1. 2000

    Tour of Homes

    Sponsored a Tour of Homes outing to promote full-time residency and raise funds for Edisto Beach School.

  2. 2001

    Property Taxes, Development & Trees

    Lobbied Colleton County to propose a 15% property tax cap, opposed a 78-unit development on Jungle Road, and supported a new Town tree ordinance.

  3. 2002

    Biology Camp

    Sponsored Biology Camp at Edisto Beach State Park.

  4. 2002–2006

    Property Tax Relief

    Collaborated with the No Home Tax organization on property tax relief legislation.

  5. 2003

    Timeshare Restrictions

    Supported a new Town ordinance to eliminate timeshares except in the PUD zone.

  6. 2003–2005

    State Park Development Proposal

    Opposed a new convention center and hotel proposed for the State Park.

  7. 2005–2006

    Fairfield Golf Course Development

    Opposed new homes and timeshare units proposed to replace nine holes of the golf course in Fairfield.

  8. 2006

    Offshore Gambling Boat

    Opposed the offshore gambling boat venture.

  9. 2007

    Building Heights & Dune Protection

    Lobbied the Town to eliminate structure height variances in the building code and supported new sand fencing for beach dune protection.

  10. 2008

    A New EBPOA Website

    Created a new website for the Association.

  11. 2009

    Insurance Advocacy & Scenic Byway

    Joined Seabrook and Kiawah Islands in pressing for an investigation of the SC Wind & Hail Underwriters Association and assisted Edisto Island in getting Highway 174 designated as a National Scenic Byway.

2010–2026

Continuing the Association’s Work

  1. 2013

    Water Treatment Plant Costs

    Opposed the high cost of the proposed new reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plant.

  2. 2015

    Spring Grove Development

    Opposed the Spring Grove Development Plan for Charleston County.

  3. 2016

    Jane Edward Elementary School

    Opposed the closing of Jane Edward Elementary School.

  4. 2017

    Town Goal-Setting Retreats

    Began actively participating in Town Council’s annual goal-setting retreats.

  5. 2019

    Lower-Cost Water Treatment

    Supported construction of the new, lower-cost RO water treatment plant.

  6. 2020

    State Park Annexation

    Opposed the State Park being annexed by the Town.

  7. 2022–2025

    Development, Trees & Community Planning

    Opposed rezoning for a proposed Dollar General on Edisto Island, promoted changes to the Town’s tree ordinance, and reviewed both Charleston County’s and the Town’s Comprehensive Plans.

  8. 2026

    Protecting the ACE Basin

    Opposed a new data center location adjacent to the ACE Basin.
